Call for Video Entries for the 2nd Urban Audiovisual Festival, with the theme Urban Mobilities

The theme of the 2nd Urban Audiovisual Festival organized by CIES-IUL, ISUP and CICS.Nova FSCHA in partnership with the Library of Marvila (Lisbon) is the Urban Mobilities.

The Festival team asks scholars, videomakers, students and video-artist to reflect on the problematic of the urban mobilities and transportation modes, at individual and collective, local and global scale. We welcome short films (approx. 15 min.) and long films (approx. 90 mins) in seven different formats:

• Documentary
• Ethnographic Film
• Music-video
• MobileFilms: films made using cell-phones or tablets

• Experimental: audiovisual projects that evidence a new approach to visual methods
• Fiction films
• Animated films

Une anthropologie politique du religieux. Réformer le droit de la famille au Moyen-Orient

Que nous dit l'activisme juridique sur la façon dont la loi islamique est appliquée au Moyen-Orient? Avant de suggérer que la sécularisation des systèmes juridiques du Moyen-Orient ferait progresser l'égalité des sexes, je propose que nous examinions comment la loi islamique est définie et comment elle est mise en œuvre dans les pays où elle influence la législation. Pour ce faire, je me baserai sur deux épisodes militants qui ont secoué le Liban ces dernières années: l’un dirigé par des musulmans sunnites, l’autre par des musulmans chiites. Chacune de ces deux campagnes visait à modifier les normes islamiques appliquées par les juges au Liban. En suivant les parcours et les mesures prisent par les activistes sunnites et chiites, en prêtant attention à leurs erreurs, leurs échecs et leurs succès, nous bénéficierons d’une nouvelle perspective sur le problème de la loi islamique et son enchevêtrement avec la grammaire juridique de la laïcité.

Bio

Jean-Michel Landry est stagiaire postdoctoral Banting à l’Université McGill et chercheur à l’Institut Français du Proche-Orient. Sa thèse, soutenue à l’Université de Californie—Berkeley, a reçu le premier prix de la Association of Middle East Anthropology.

 A Political Anthropology of Religion. Reforming Family Law in the Middle East

What does legal activism tell us about the way Islamic law is applied in the Middle East? Before suggesting that secularizing the legal systems of the Middle East would advance gender equality, I propose we look at how Islamic law is defined and implemented in countries where it informs legislation. To do so, I take my cue from two episodes of activism that rocked Lebanon over recent years: one led by Sunni Muslims, the other by Shi‘i Muslims. Each of these two advocacy campaigns aimed to modify the Islamic norms enforced by judges in contemporary Lebanon. By following courses of action taken by the Sunni and Shi‘i activists, paying attention to their mistakes, failures and achievements, we gain a new perspective on the problem of Islamic law, and its entanglement with the legal grammar of secularism. 
Bio Jean-Michel Landry is a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at McGill University and an affiliated researcher at the Institut Français du Proche-Orient. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2016. In 2017, he received Best Dissertation Award from the Association of Middle East Anthropology.

L’École d’études sociologiques et anthropologiques vous propose le troisième symposium annuel sur la recherche en anthropologie, le vendredi 28 septembre, de 10 à 16 heures, au Pavillon des Sciences Sociales 5028. Les étudiants de la maîtrise en anthropologie et quelques professeurs revenant de leur travail de terrain présenteront leurs expériences et débattront de leurs premiers résultats, puis une discussion bilingue suivra chaque présentation. L'objectif principal de ce colloque est d’offrir aux étudiants et professeurs l’opportunité de partager les résultats préliminaires de leurs recherches et de recevoir des commentaires et rétroactions utiles. Chaque conférencier aura 15 minutes pour présenter ses observations qui seront suivies par 10 minutes de discussion avec le public.

 

Un déjeuner sera offert à 12h20, fourni par L’École d’études sociologiques et anthropologiques. Tous sont bienvenus; nos étudiants de premier et de deuxième cycles sont particulièrement encouragés à venir.

The School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies invite you to the 3rd annual Anthropology Fieldwork Symposium, which will take place on Friday, September 28, 2017 in FSS 5028, from 10am to 4pm.

 

The symposium is intended to provide a number of anthropology masters students and professors returning from “the field” an opportunity to present and receive feedback on their preliminary findings and experiences. Each speaker will have 15 minutes to present their research observations followed by 10 minutes of bilingual discussion with the audience. 

A complimentary lunch will be provided at 12:20, courtesy of the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies.

Stories of Serbia: What Do You Care About? (An Ethnographic Film)

The interviews featured in this film centre around the question: What are you passionate about? Although a vague question, it has yielded a wide variety of responses from the Serbian locals featured. Some choose to discuss personal beliefs and ideas, some choose to recall stories that are dear to them, some choose to display beloved landmarks in the city, and much more. This film focuses only on the hands of the subjects while they do these things they have passion for and speak about them, since body language is an important indicator of this passion. Additionally, a focus on hands symbolizes the idea of fragments: these are fragments of Serbia, fragments of people’s lives, and fragments of the people themselves. The film alternates between stories, showing only small snippets at a time. What emerges is a wide variety of contrasting hands, stories, ideas, and spaces with one uniting element: everyone has passion. Everyone has something they care about. While this is an idea that can extend beyond the context of Serbia, the stories we hear in this film still present vast cultural information about what it means to be an individual in Serbia.

Picturing Zika: A Visual Anthropology of Urban Climate Politics and Crisis in Brazil

This project proposes one year of research focused on the visual representations and narratives of the Zika virus, asking, what is the relationship between digital media forms and the urban climate politics of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during a public health crisis? Media include images, videos, popular journalism texts and academic scholarship, while political actions include governmental programs, municipal policies, and activism. In Phase I September-March the PI and students use the tools of visual and media anthropology to generate a nuanced public archive with diverse media data of the evolution of the narrative of the Zika virus as a global health crisis. In Phase II, the PI undertakes fieldwork toward analysis of the iterative relationships between these media forms and actual praxis. The objective is to produce and make available knowledge about the mobile intersection of internet media and urban climate politics concerning the emergence of the Zika virus in Brazil. Findings will be aimed at both anthropologists (in particular visual and media anthropologists) and those with topical interest in cities, water management, climate change, and infectious disease.

The appearance in Brazil of the Zika virus (first isolated in Uganda in 1947), is already associated with the iconic photo of the “bucket baby” with microcephaly captured by an AP photographer in December 2015. The story of the baby, the photo and a virus so far from its African forest of origin can be taken up as one of globalization or international health, precarious urban infrastructures or climate change. In actuality, events tend to be narrated through shifting combinations of all of these. Yet there is very little research on how narratives and images of a public health event emerge, or the role played by visual representations and figurations in scientific research, political action (and inaction), or the lived experience of those involved, from affected families to scientists to journalists.

The Zika virus, we propose, emerges at the intersection of some of the most vital and contentious issues in the world today, including urbanization, management of water resources, climate change, and global vulnerability to infectious disease. In general, the work and knowledge produced within each of these domains is "first order." That is, practitioners engage in direct observations of and operations on their aspect of the problem, and their work is fundamentally formed by the parameters of their discipline and profession, e.g. biomedicine, public health, city planning, and journalism. This project engages in what Niklas Luhmann called "second order observation" (2002: 95), that is, observation of those producing first order knowledge, toward better understanding how their knowledge is produced and applied, and, crucially, the relation between the two. The key element shaping knowledge production that we are focused on is the role of media narratives and images. 

In Phase I, the PI and student researchers will document the forms and practices of visual and textual communication in popular journalism on the Zika virus, academic scholarship, and social media, paying careful to attention what then happens in the world. In Phase II, the PI will complement this documentation with ethnographic fieldwork at significant sites in greater Rio de Janeiro: Institute Oswaldo Cruz (FioCruz), which is the preeminent public health research institute in Brazil; the marginalized and neglected precarious urban environment called the Baixada Fluminense within which the FioCruz is, ironically, located; and the media ecology of the city itself. Rio de Janeiro is where Brazil’s most powerful media conglomerates are headquartered, and where its journalists, editors and managers live, and also where many alternative journalism groups emerged during and in the wake of major 2013 protests.

This first year of research will capture the crucial time period of the virus’ emergence as a “public health emergency of international concern,” documenting and analyzing how scientific knowledge production, political debates, personal experiences, and journalistic narratives converge. This is envisioned as the first phase of a three-year project on urban climate politics (subsequent REB applications will be submitted), rather than a preliminary study. However, both the construction of the case itself and the methods used will explicitly analyzed and adapted for continued use in the second phase and in subsequent years.
